South Carolina Salesperson & Broker Continuing Education Requirements

CE Requirements for Salespersons and Brokers

Renewal Period: Every two years, by June 30th.

Hours Required:

• Total Hours: 10 hours
• Mandatory Hours: 4 hours focused on instruction in mandated topics.
• Elective Hours: 6 hours that can be chosen from approved elective courses.

CE Requirements for Broker-in-Charge
Brokers-in-charge have a slightly different requirement to cater to their advanced role in real estate practices.

Hours Required:

• Total Hours: 10 hours
• Mandatory Hours: 4 hours
• Core Hours: 4 hours specifically in advanced real estate topics designed for brokers-in-charge.
• Elective Hours: 2 hours from approved elective courses.

Key Provisions

• Criminal Background Check: Agents are required to submit to a criminal background check every third renewal.
• Renewal Cycle: Licenses must be renewed biennially, with the licensees’ continuing education deadline coinciding with their renewal.
• Exemptions: Certain licensees may be exempt from the biennial CE requirements, including those on inactive status, nonresident brokers or salespersons who meet CE requirements in their jurisdiction, and brokers or salespersons with 25 years of licensure in South Carolina who are 65 years of age or older, among others.

Exemptions and Waivers

• Salespersons completing a post-licensing course or taking a broker course are exempt for the renewal period in which the course was taken.
• Licensees on inactive status or those who meet CE requirements in their jurisdiction may be exempt.
• Brokers or salespersons with extensive experience and/or age can apply for full or partial continuing education waivers.

Additional Notes

• Carryover: Excess CE hours cannot be carried forward to another renewal period.
• Waivers for Experience: Experience-based partial continuing education waivers are available, requiring completion of only the mandatory four-hour core course biennially.
